ow many words and phrases can you think of to describe female masturbation? And we're not talking about those old timey euphemisms like 'flick the bean', 'dialling O on the pink telephone', both of which are awks. We're talking a word that means 'to masturbate' but exclusively for women. Land of progressives and vikings, Sweden has come to the rescue via a new campaign led by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education
They recently launched a competition asking people to suggest alternative words for female masturbation to promote "an open, positive view of sex and relationship issues". As a spokesperson for the organisation said, "When it comes to masturbation, people mostly think about just men doing it and we don't think of it as common for women. If we don't have a word in the language, how can we even talk about it?"
Currently the organisation has a shortlist of 34 potential words, which the Swedish public will now vote on. Most shortlisted words are hella Ikea-sounding, like 'klittra', 'pulla' and 'selfa'. Kind of prefer 'masturbate' over those guys, but different strokes (lol?) and all that. Feel free to suggest alternative words in the FB comments. Keep it semi-clean, pervs. Here's some we prepared earlier to get the ball rolling (zing?) and to prove it's very hard to get past the euphemism stage of our social development.
